🎭 Propp's Story Generator

Beat writer's block with Vladimir Propp's 31 narrative functions from Russian folklore

What are Propp's Functions?

In 1928, Russian scholar Vladimir Propp analyzed hundreds of folk tales and discovered that they all followed similar patterns. He identified 31 narrative functions - recurring story elements that appear in tales across cultures.

These functions are building blocks you can use to create compelling stories, break through writer's block, or reimagine classic tales in new ways.

Example: Three Functions

🚫
Function #2
Interdiction
The hero is warned not to do something ("Don't open that door!" or "Never go into the forest alone")
βš”οΈ
Function #16
Combat
The hero and villain engage in direct combat or competition
πŸ‘‘
Function #31
Wedding
The hero is rewarded, often with marriage or ascending to the throne

πŸ“– Example Story Using These Three Functions:

A young detective is warned by her mentor not to investigate the city's most powerful family alone (Interdiction). She ignores the warning and confronts the family's patriarch in a tense interrogation where they match wits (Combat). After exposing his crimes, she's promoted to chief of police and marries her longtime partner (Wedding).
